Looking for a hotel room?

April 9, 2009

I thought that the hotel star rating around the world ranged from 1 star to 5 stars. Even then I don’t recall ever seeing or hearing about a 1 star hotel and I can’t even dream of staying in a 5 star hotel. Well, if you are one of those people that had the same perception as me, then we are all wrong. Take a look:

Switzerland Bunker Hotel

The picture above shows a room in a 0 (zero) – star hotel. This innovative hotel is based in Switzerland and it costs 6GBP for a bed (zero-star hotel link). Of course, there is no central heating, there are no windows and the walls are made from concrete. And yes you guessed right, no breakfast. But they do give you complimentary slippers so you can walk on the concrete floor (and who knows on what else) and earplugs! Quite a deal huh? Well next time you are looking for a hotel in Zurich you know where to look! I wonder if you can even get that hotel on Expedia if you search.

On the other end of the spectrum, there is a picture of the world’s only 7-star hotel:

This hotel is based (where else?) in Dubai and it is called the Burj. This is the world’s second tallest hotel, there is a dress code to enter the hotel (no jeans, tennis shoes or shorts) and the personnel of the hotel knows your name (believe me I would do if I had the opportunity of getting a good tip). I am not going to get into more details about the facilities of the hotels. I will just tell you that if you are interested in the Royal Suite it only costs $28,000 per night. A regular suite costs only $1,000. So, if you are ever in the United Arab Emirates you know where to look for a room.
